Book 2: DARK SECRET
Book 3: HER HUSBAND’S SECRET
Book 4: THEIR FATAL SECRETS

My Review

5 out of 5 stars
This is Book 4 in the Neal & Merry series but the first one I have read (which is a situation I plan to rectify at the first opportunity). Although it is part of a series I can assure readers that it works perfectly as a stand-alone.

Some lads on their way home after an night out, a bit the worse for drink, notice a body in the canal. When another body turns up further down the same stretch of water Neil’s team pull out all the stops to find out what happened.

This book is planned out slightly differently to the norm so the murders are at the beginning and the reader is then brought deep into the investigation. It is a fast paced read with intrigue and suspense that make this a gripping, unputdownable read. We get to see life through the eyes of a damaged individual which make this a psychological thriller at its very best with an ‘edge of your seat’ ending you won’t see coming. There are many twists and turns as other crimes become tangled up and the team have to sort out the mess and work out what belongs where. It has enough personal and relationship content to make this a very realistic story.

The characters develop well as the book progresses. I love the team and look forward to reading the previous books to learn more about the events hinted at in this book. I especially like Jess, a strong character and a fighter who Ava Merry has a connection with which becomes relevant as the story unfolds.

Definitely worth the 5 stars. Thank you to Joffe Books for the advance copy.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000446_00066]

Looking for a brilliant murder mystery with a feisty female detective?

MEET DI HILLARY GREENE, A POLICE WOMAN WITH A THIRST FOR JUSTICE AND A COMPLICATED CAREER

A pretty French student is found dead in her room at an exclusive Oxford college. Everyone thinks it is another tragic case of accidental drug overdose.

But Detective Hillary Greene has a nose for the truth. She quickly discovers that the student had been up to some very unusual activities.

With a shocking cause of death found, the case becomes a high-profile murder investigation.

Adding to the pressure, Hillary’s nemesis is transferred to work with her at the station.

Can Hillary keep her cool and get justice for the unfortunate student?

MURDER AT THE UNIVERSITY is the second in a series of page-turning crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire.

Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

THE LOCATION
The Oxford Canal meanders through the beautiful county of Oxfordshire, sometimes joining up with the rivers Cherwell and Thames, and flows past the world-famous university city of Oxford. Unlike many canals which are practically ruler-straight commercial waterways, built to help transport goods and heavy traffic before the advent of the railways, the Oxford Canal is a more winding and natural-looking body of water, and is a haven for wildlife and wildflowers. It has several romantically-named locks on its length (such as the Three Pigeons Lock, and Dashwood Lock) and boasts the ominously-sounding Somerton Deep Lock, which often terrifies first-time boating holiday-makers.

THE DETECTIVES

DI Hillary Greene
An attractive woman in her forties, Hillary Greene is a police officer of many years’ experience, and came up through the ranks. Consequently, she knows how the system works, and is fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. She is a long-standing friend of her immediate superior officer, ‘Mellow’ Mallow and enjoys a rather enigmatic relationship with the steely Superintendent Marcus Donleavy. Popular with the rank and file for her no-nonsense attitude and competence, she is currently under investigation on account of her recently deceased, and definitely corrupt husband (Ronnie Greene). But adversity has never stopped her from doing her job.

DCI Philip ‘Mellow’ Mallow
Mel appreciates Hillary’s first-rate ability to solve her cases, and isn’t happy about her harassment by the officers from York. Known for his sartorial elegance and laid-back manners, he has a sharp mind, and an eye for the ladies. A good friend and ally for Hillary in her recent tribulations, he’s determined to keep his best investigator focused on the problems at hand.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW.”

The Quiet Geordie

This is the second in the Hillary Greene series, but can be read as a standalone. I have not as yet read the first one, but felt there was enough time spent on bridging the gap between the novels.

I really enjoyed the plot and all the twists and turns.  Read more here

By The Letter Book Reviews

As for the case they are working on I certainly couldn’t have figured out who the murderer was. The author certainly seems to spread out the case, Hillary’s personal life as well as working life so you get an even feel of what her life is like.

Linda Strong Book Reviews

‘The book is well written and with the blend of both professional and personal, the characters become quite credible. It’s a police procedural as the team interrogates multiple suspects. It’s a solidly paced story that moves much more quickly toward the ending. ‘

My Review

I don’t usually read Dystopian genre but I like to read outside my comfort zone occasionally so gave this book a chance.  I think it will appeal to all readers of Crime Fiction and Contemporary Fiction as well as Dystopian.

It is a fast paced read with plenty of action and twists and turns. The story is a very realistic one and portrayed a believable scenario of what the future could look like.

I love Sky she is an independent character who refuses to conform to what the authorities dictate and starts on a mission to find a new life. She is joined in her quest by Bunce who also wants a different future to the one he is destined for. He is a unique character that grows on you as the book progresses.

I am in total awe of the writer of this book. How you think up the characters and plot for a book like this I have no idea but it has been done brilliantly.  There are a lot of ‘hidden’ issues that brought new dimensions to the story.

Many thanks to Bloodhound Books for the advance copy.
