To catch this killer, Hillary will need to dig deep into the dark secrets of a small community.

This is a crime mystery full of well-observed characters, which will have you gripped from start to finish.

MURDER IN THE FAMILY is the fifth in a series of page-turning crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire.

THE LOCATION
The crime happens in an allotment shed in a small Oxfordshire hamlet. Allotments, or strips of land rented by individuals to grow fruit and vegetables (or flowers for flower shows), have always been popular. During the war years, they were a valuable source of food, and in modern times, their popularity hasn’t waned either, as the growing taste for organic fruit and veg, and ‘getting back to nature’ appeals to a wide range of people. Beekeepers find them very useful too. Waiting lists can be long, as they represent a perfect way to de-stress after a day in the city, and provide a peaceful haven for many people. But in the tiny hamlet of Aston Lea, set in fields of barley, and sheltered from the world and the roads by towering Hawthorne hedges, the allotments are a perfect, secret, quiet place to commit murder.

THE DETECTIVES

DI Hillary Greene
An attractive woman in her forties, Hillary Greene is a police officer of many years’ experience, and came up through the ranks. Consequently, she knows how the system works, and is fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. She is a long-standing friend of her immediate superior officer, ‘Mellow’ Mallow and enjoys a rather enigmatic relationship with the steely Superintendent Marcus Donleavy. Popular with the rank and file for her no-nonsense attitude and competence.

DCI Philip ‘Mellow’ Mallow
Mel appreciates Hillary’s first-rate ability to solve her cases, and isn’t happy about her harassment by the officers from York. Known for his sartorial elegance and laid-back manners, he has a sharp mind, and an eye for the ladies. A good friend and ally for Hillary in her recent tribulations, he’s determined to keep his best investigator focused on the problems at hand.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “THROUGH A NARROW DOOR.”

My Review

I am absolutely loving this Hillary Greene series by Faith Martin.  I think it is, possibly, even better because Joffe Books are republishing them so the next book is never far away.

Following events in the previous book Hillary is acting DCI and Mel has been promoted to the position he lost out on in book 4 due to his relationship with Janine. Tommy is on the verge of leaving for a Sergeant position at another station so the whole dynamics of the team is undergoing change.  Hillary is unsure if she is suited to the DCI position when she is replaced by Paul Danvers and is back to what she is going best: investigating murder.  The case is the murder of a teenage boy and there is a lack of suspects and motives until Hillary gets going and starts uncovering clues.

The book is very intriguing there seems to be nothing to go on all the way through the story so the big reveal in the last chapter is a shock I definitely wasn’t expecting.

Being a mother I am aware of the way teenage friends have each other’s backs in their quest to keep as much from the parents’ as possible and Faith has captured that excellently in this book.  As the team interview person after person they keep hitting brick walls knowing that there is a lot more to the stories than the people are telling and it is up to the team to try to get to the bottom of it.  There is a lot going on which adds to the mystery and keeps the pages turning.

I loved this book but I did feel there was too much reference to events in previous books this might be an advantage for people reading the book as stand alone but for the ones who have read the series it makes it a bit slow going in places.  That said overall another brilliant read and well worth the 5 stars.

My Review

This is book 3 in the James Ryker series and the books just get better.  There is a reason why they fly up the Amazon charts: hundreds of readers can’t be wrong these books are BRILLIANT.  I have read all 3 in this series and plan to read Rob’s backlist asap.

Carl Logan and Angela were secret service agents and thought they had left it all behind.  They reinvented themselves as James and Lisa Ryker.  They created a new life together but you can never really escape your past and James was dragged back in to service in The Red Cobra.  While he was hunting down the enemy Lisa disappeared and James, having found her body, is now on a hunt for her killer.

James character builds gradually in the previous books but they do work very well as stand-alone although I would recommend reading them in sequence to ensure you get the full enjoyment.  James is a well trained and resourceful agent and definitely someone you wouldn’t want as your enemy.  As your friend he will always have your back and this is repayed by his seniors who use their powers to extract him from difficult situations.

The book is extremely well written and the reader is gripped from the first page as we are taken on a journey through the underworld of the secret services we all know exist but are very well hidden.  It is a very realistic view with tragic consequences among the successes of the actions taken in pursuit of their pray.

In this book his relationship with Willoughby plays a big part and makes the story work.  It isn’t a romantic relationship, sex doesn’t figure in the lives of these people, it is a relationship built on respect for each other and a commitment to their chosen career.  There are some horrific images brought to life in the book that keeps the adrenaline pumping and the pages turning.

Another absolutely brilliant read from an author that never disappoints.

Many thanks to Bloodhound Books, Sarah Hardy and Rob Sinclair for giving me, yet again, the opportunity to read an advance copy .

Amanda Fleet is a physiologist by training and a writer at heart. She spent 18 years teaching science and medicine undergraduates at St Andrews University, but now uses her knowledge to work out how to kill people (in her books!). She completed her first degree at St Andrews University and her doctorate at University College, London.

She has been an inveterate stationery addict since a child, amassing a considerable stash of fountain pens, ink and notebooks during her lifetime. These have thankfully come in useful, as she tends to write rather than type, at least in the early stages of writing a book.

During her time at St Andrews, she was involved with two Scottish Government funded projects, working with the College of Medicine in Blantyre, Malawi. While in Malawi, she learned about the plight of the many street children there and helped to set up a Community Based Organisation that works with homeless Malawian children to support them through education and training – Chimwemwe Children’s Centre. It was this experience that helped to shape the Malawian aspects in her first novel, The Wrong Kind of Clouds.

Amanda lives in Scotland with her husband, where she can be found writing, walking and running. The Wrong Kind of Clouds is her début novel and was published by Matador in early 2016. It will be re-published by Joffe Books.

It felt a little weird reading a story set during a heatwave, especially as right now it’s bloody freezing! But this is a good solid police procedural. Do you like police procedurals with great characters and real grit?

Discover Detective Tom Mariner in this critically acclaimed series.

Two teenagers go missing on the same day. Just a coincidence?

The two young people are from very different backgrounds: Yasmin is the talented, grammar-school-educated daughter of devout Muslim professionals. Ricky disappears after storming out of his council house after an argument with his mum’s latest boyfriend.

DI Mariner knows Ricky’s mother from his days in uniform. He is furious when his superiors take him off Ricky’s case and reassign him to the more politically sensitive investigation. The press — and his bosses — are convinced that Yasmin’s disappearance is a racially motivated abduction. The Akrams have been the target of a far right group.

But Mariner soon discovers that Yasmin is far from the innocent victim her parents think she is. Can he get to the bottom of a perplexing case where no one is what they seem?

Find out the answers in this crime mystery full of stunning twists and turns.

Perfect for fans of Peter James, Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson. This is the second book in the DI MARINER SERIES, more books coming soon!

THE SETTING
Birmingham is a city of stark contrasts with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Playing a key role in the industrial revolution, it helped shape the nation’s manufacturing industry

But with its many green spaces, Birmingham also borders on the beautiful countryside of Worcestershire and Warwickshire, is just a few miles from Stratford on Avon and a short drive from the wild country of mid-Wales.

Birmingham’s population is large and ethnically diverse, and while urban regeneration has forged a modern and culturally vibrant city, the decaying remnants of the industrial past and 1960s concrete jungle give it a unique and gritty character; the dark underbelly policed by DI Tom Mariner and his team.

Detective Inspector Tom Mariner is, on the surface, an average dedicated policeman, but his experiences as a younger man have given him an insight into life on the dark side, and a clear sense of right and wrong. Mariner has little interest in material things. He lives in a modest canal-side cottage, enjoys the occasional (real) beer and game of dominoes and drives an old car. He is most at home in the outdoors, with an OS map and a compass, and in times of crisis, will take off and walk for miles in any weather.

THIS IS A REVISED EDITION OF A BOOK FIRST PUBLISHED AS “BLOOD OF THE INNOCENTS.”

DI MARINER SERIES
Book 1: Deadly Lies
Book 2: Innocent Lies
More coming soon!

PRAISE FOR MARINER
I really couldn’t put it down’ Raw Edge Magazine

‘Collett is a wonderful writer, subtle, clever, strong on atmosphere and character. This is a fitting follow-up to her debut and reassures the crime fan that the police procedural is in safe hands. More, please’ Yorkshire Post

Brass in Pocket coverBrass in Pocket (Inspector Drake #1) by Stephen Puleston

It is the middle of the night …The road is deserted …A killer is waiting …

Two traffic officers are killed on an isolated mountain pass in North Wales. Inspector Drake is called to the scene and quickly discovers a message left by the killer – traffic cones in the shape of a No 4.

The killer starts sending the Wales Police Service lyrics from famous rock songs. Are they messages or is there some hidden meaning in them?

Does it all mean more killings are likely? When a politician is killed Drake has his answer. And then the killer sends more song lyrics. Now Drake has to face the possibility of more deaths but with numbers dominating the case Drake has to face his own rituals and obsessions.

Finally, when the killer threatens Drake and his family he faces his greatest challenge in finding the killer before he strikes again.

Inspector Drake

Detective Ian Drake is an inspector in the Wales Police Service and is based in the northern division headquarters near Colwyn Bay on the coast. North Wales is a large area that stretches from the coast to the border with England. It is an area rich in history and great scenery.

Book 0.5: The Devils Kitchen (a prequel novella)

Book 1: Brass in Pocket

Book 2: Worse than Dead

Book 3: Against the Tide

Book 4: Dead on your Feet

Book 5: March 2018

My Review

This is book 1 in the Inspector Drake series although there is a prequel novella, The Devil’s Kitchen that is available free on Amazon.

The story begins with the murder of 2 traffic policemen.  Inspector Ian Drake is called to the scene and so begins a race to unravel the cryptic clues before more people die.

As the book progresses we learn a lot about Ian and his struggle with OCD.  It brings a human perspective to the book as his issues with cleanliness cause him problems with other members of his team.

The story moves along at a decent pace as the reader becomes more intrigued as the case develops and more people die.  What is the link and who is the murderer is something that is a closely guarded secret until we are almost at the end of the book.  I was as flumoxed as the team trying to work out the who and why and then WOW I didn’t see THAT coming.

This is a well written, gripping book that will have the reader turning page after page.  I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Definitely worth the 5 stars.

BLOG TOUR – The Perfect Murder by Stewart Giles

THE PERFECT MURDER
From #1 best-selling author Stewart Giles comes the new mystery set on the Cornish coast. Where the pretty villages and towns hold some very dark secrets.

COULD YOU COMMIT THE PERFECT MURDER?

Two cats are found mutilated in the same town. Detective Harriet Taylor is reluctant to investigate, but then one of their owners is killed a bizarre way that same day.

Harriet and the team step in. The dead woman has four words written on her neck — four very ambiguous words.

Then another body turns up with the same words written on it. Harriet fears the worst — a serial killer is on the loose in the small Cornish town of Trotterdown.

Can Harriet stop the murders and work out the connection to the local writing group who, conveniently enough, have been set the task of writing stories on the theme of “the perfect murder”?

A crime mystery with a touch of black humour. You’ll enjoy this fast-paced and dark unearthing of the secrets of a sleepy Cornish community.

After reading English & Drama at three different English Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling and finally ended up in South Africa, where I still live. I enjoy the serene life running a boat shop on the banks of the Vaal Dam. I came up with the DS Jason Smith idea after my wife dropped a rather large speaker on my head. Whether it was intentional still remains a mystery. Smith, the first in the series was finished in September 2013 and was closely followed by Boomerang and Ladybird. Occam’s Razor, Harlequin and Phobia (a series of short stories detailing Smith’s early life) were all completed in one hazy 365 days and Selene was done and dusted a few months later. Horsemen, the seventh in the DS Smith thriller series is out now. The Beekeeper, a departure from the DS Smith series will be released through Joffe Books on 22 May.
