Love gripping crime fiction? Discover Detective Stephen Greco, a meticulous policeman with a messy personal life.

Two young men break into an expensive house in Cheshire. They take money and jewellery — and a large amount of heroin. Within twenty-four hours they are found brutally murdered.

The killings have the hallmarks of a local drug baron. The two victims were also “angels” helping in a community project which seems to have been lowering the crime rate in the area.

Meanwhile, Detective Stephen Greco’s colleague and on-off girlfriend Grace is pregnant. He isn’t sure how he feels, and they haven’t told the boss.

This gripping and fast-paced crime mystery ends with a series of shocking twists.

If you like Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, Mel Sherratt, Ruth Rendell, or Mark Billingham you will enjoy this exciting new crime fiction writer.

THE DETECTIVES
DCI Stephen Greco is a meticulous policeman with a touch of O.C.D. Easy to admire, but difficult to like. He has created a new team after a personal tragedy threatened to end his career, and is struggling to care for his daughter.
DS Grace Harper is an ambitious young policewoman with excellent people skills. Like Greco, she is a single parent and tries to balance work and childcare.

THE SETTING
The Northern city of Manchester is a place of great diversity, from high-end restaurants and clubs for the moneyed classes to grim housing estates riven by crime and drugs.

My Review

This is the newest addition to the DI Greco series and is the first I have read.  It works very well as a stand-alone.  We miss a bit of the background to Grace and Stephen but it isn’t difficult to work it out and Helen has made an excellent job of putting in enough to fill in the blanks but not that much that people who have read the earlier books will be bored with repetition.

A couple of lads get a tip off there are drugs to be found but they were not expecting the massive amount that they stumbled upon.  They are made for life but that life is destined to be very short lived.

As Greco and his team search for clues and start putting the pieces together something is not working out in Stephen’s mind.  Can his gut instinct be relied upon given the personal problems he is fighting with in his mind?  All the clues point to one person but is that too easy?  When the drugs team from another branch try stealing the case the team are on a mission to solve the murders before they lose the case.

The main characters are Greco and Grace as we learn more about their characters.  There is a very human element to Helen’s books that bring the characters to life and I really felt I got to know Stephen and Grace in this book.  I am waiting for the next book to see how they handle the fall out from their relationship.

This is a fast paced story with a very intricate plot.  There are many twists and turns along the way to an ending that nobody expected.  The readers is gripped from the very beginning and the pages just keep turning.

A brilliant book and I am looking forward to more from this author.

Helen Durrant author picAuthor Bio

Helen sets her books in the area she has lived in for many years. The towns and villages that sit in the shelter of the Pennine hills. This is an area between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills. It offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein.

Helen always planned to write crime novels. But until she retired from full-time work in a local further education college, it had to go on the back burner. Once she did retire – there was no excuse. She now writes full-time. Retirement proper will have to wait!

Currently there are seven books in the ‘Calladine & Bayliss’ series available – Dead Wrong, Dead Silent, Dead List, Dead Lost, Dead & Buried, Dead Nasty – and the latest – Dead Jealous.

Also available are three books in the new ‘DI Greco’ series – Dark Murder, Dark Houses, Dark Trade  and the latest – Dark Angel.

BLOG TOUR: The Abandoned by Sharon Thompson

Today it is my stop on the #blogtour for The Abandoned by Sharon Thompson.

What everyone is saying about The Abandoned:

★★★★★ “Great fast paced book, great strong characters” Wendy Haines

★★★★★ “A well deserved five stars and would highly recommend this story to all” Gemma Myers

Available from: Amazon UK    Amazon US    Amazon Australia

Cover.jpgThe Abandoned by Sharon Thompson

Peggy Bowden has not had an easy life. As a teenager her mother was committed to an asylum and then a local priest forced her into an abusive marriage. But when her husband dies in an accident Peggy sees an opportunity to start again and trains as a midwife.

In 1950s Dublin it is not easy for a woman to make a living and Peggy sees a chance to start a business and soon a lucrative maternity home is up and running. But when Peggy realizes that the lack of birth control is an issue for women, she uses their plight as a way to make more money. Very soon Peggy is on the wrong side of the law.

What makes a woman decide to walk down a dark path? Can Peggy ever get back on the straight and narrow? Or will she have to pay for her crimes?

Set against the backdrop of Ireland in the 1950’s The Abandoned tells the story of one woman’s fight for survival and her journey into the underbelly of a dangerous criminal world.

My Review

Peggy is a survivor.  Her mother had serious mental health issues,  she has been abused and imprisoned but she wont be broken.  She takes a young girl she meets inside under her wing and moves in to number 34 to run a brothel with an abortion clinic on the side.

Despite everything she has done you have to love her.  She is a brilliant character, feisty and sassy as they come.  Her ‘girls’ come in all shapes and sizes.  As the story progresses Peggy finds herself entangled with some bad people and is not sure how she is going to untangle herself.  When angry people keep turning up on her doorstep she goes in search of the only family she knows of and from there her life takes another drastic turn.

Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire Peggy is a walking disaster area.  As the story progresses we find that she may be down but she definitely isn’t out and she finds a way to leave her past behind for good as she takes on a new name and new life but all is not as it seems.

This is a steadily moving story of a woman’s struggle to find her way in a cruel world but every turn brings her face to face with another battle in the war that her life has become.

A very good read that will appeal to readers of thrillers and crime fiction.

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for the advance copy.

BOOK REVIEW: Tell Me I’m Wrong by Adam Croft

Tell Me I'm WrongTell Me I’m Wrong by Adam Croft

What if you discovered your husband was a serial killer?

Megan Miller is an ordinary woman with a young family — until a shocking discovery shatters her perfect world.

When two young boys are brutally murdered in their tight-knit village community, Megan slowly begins to realise the signs all point to the lovable local primary school teacher — her husband.

But when she begins to delve deeper into her husband’s secret life, she makes discoveries that will make her question everything she knows — and make her fear for her young daughter’s life.

Facing an impossible decision, she is desperate to uncover the truth. But once you know something, it can’t be unknown. And the more she learns, the more she wishes she never knew anything at all…

My Review

Wow this is one roller-coaster ride of a book that will have you turning page after page through twists and turns that keep the adrenaline pumping right to the very end.

Megan is a new mother struggling to bond with her daughter after many years of childlessness.  She built herself up to having a son and ended up with a daughter knowing there would be no more.  She is suffering from post-natal depression and her husband keeps taking himself off fishing leaving her with a screaming child.  Despite support from parents on both sides she still isn’t coping and Chris doesn’t understand.

Chris, the husband, is a typical man who runs away from situations he doesn’t understand or can’t cope with.  When children he taught are murdered he disappears deep within himself which brings Megan to suspect there is something more going on.

The story is told from the perspective of Chris and Megan and that makes it unusual but it really is a brilliant read that is very well written.  There are so many different threads to this story and they all tie together brilliantly as the reader is given an insight into post-natal depression and how the mind can play tricks on you.

It all comes together in a mind blowing ending that you won’t see coming.  This is an unputdownable read that will appeal to anyone who likes crime fiction.  Well worth the 5 stars.

His Knight & Culverhouse crime thriller series has sold more than 250,000 copies worldwide, with his Kempston Hardwick mystery books being adapted as audio plays starring some of the biggest names in British TV.

With the main plot being the murder investigation I thought it was really well written and kept me guessing all the way through to the end as there are so many potential suspects, and very little to go on.  Through the story there are lots of little twists and red herrings to keep the reader on Hilary guessing and double guessing themselves with who the murderer is.  Read more here

Hillary is still as feisty as ever. She’s still living on a canal boat but is now in a relationship with Mike Regis, a fellow officer in the Vice squad but her boss DCI Danvers also has an eye on her. Gemma Fordham makes an interesting addition to Hillary’s team, weirdly I like her even though she’s seems a bit dodgy.  Read more here

Books from Dusk till Dawn

This has certainly been my kind of read. A very entertaining murder mystery, with an extremely likable DI and the promise of a bubbling and festering secret that will erupt spectacularly probably in the next book.  Read more here

The Quiet Geordie

As is always the case, there is so much more to the book than the main case. This time, the secondary story focuses on the new Detective Sergeant, Gemma Fordham. She seems perfect, which makes Hillary suspicious as to why she wanted to be seconded specially to her team. She’s more used to training and difficult cases given to her.  Read more here

If you haven’t started the DI Hillary Green series then you’re missing out. I always find it fascinating to peer into the point of view of protagonist Hillary. #hillarygreene #murderinthemeadow #netgalley @joffebooks #booksnall #5stars

Looking for a brilliant best-selling murder mystery with a feisty female detective?

Meet DI HILLARY GREENE, a policewoman struggling to save her career and catch criminals.

Wayne Sutton is found dead by a stream in a beautiful meadow. His head has been bashed in and a red paper heart left on his body. The handsome young artist had a reputation as a ladies’ man.

DI Hillary Greene discovers that there were many wealthy married women buying his paintings and taking ‘private’ art lesson from him. It appears that several of them might have wanted him dead.

Hillary also has a new detective sergeant, Gemma Fordham. Seemingly efficient and pleasant, she harbours a secret agenda.

Can Hillary get to the bottom of a complex case involving jealousy, love, and cold-blooded murder?

This is a crime mystery full of well-observed characters, which will have you gripped from start to finish.

MURDER IN THE MEADOW is the seventh in a series of page-turning crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire.
Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, Colin Dexter, or Ruth Rendell.

THE LOCATION
The pretty iron stone village of Deddington. Not far from the market town of Banbury (noted for its famous Banbury Cross of the nursery rhyme “Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross, to see a fine lady upon a white horse, with rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, she shall have music wherever she goes.”) It has an attractive and unusual church, antique shop and hotel, and several pubs known locally for their cuisine. Although not a tourist spot as such, it is a picturesque spot. Water meadows, such as the one where the body is found, are a feature of valleys in the area, and regularly flood in the winter time, adding nutrients to the soil, making them especially lovely in the spring and summer, when they can flower quite spectacularly.

THE DETECTIVES

DI Hillary Greene
An attractive woman in her forties, Hillary Greene is a police officer of many years’ experience, and came up through the ranks. Consequently, she knows how the system works, and is fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. Popular with the rank and file for her no-nonsense attitude and competence.

Mel appreciates Hillary’s first-rate ability to solve her cases, and isn’t happy about her harassment by the officers from York. Known for his sartorial elegance and laid-back manners, he has a sharp mind, and an eye for the ladies. A good friend and ally for Hillary in her recent tribulations, he’s determined to keep his best investigator focused on the problems at hand.

My Review

Author photoAuthor Bio

Faith Martin has been writing for over 25 years, in four genres and under four different pen names. She was born in Oxford and sets most of her crime novels within sight of the city of dreaming spires. A real nature lover and afficionado of the countryside, descriptions of wildlife and native flora often find their way into her manuscripts. Right now, JOFFE BOOKS are re-issuing the first eleven of the DI Hillary Greene novels in new updated editions! And the first of these, MURDER ON THE OXFORD CANAL. MURDER AT THE UNIVERSITY, MURDER OF THE BRIDE, MURDER IN THE VILLAGE, MURDER IN THE FAMILY and MURDER AT HOME are available now. Books 8-11 coming soon!

Her romance novels, written under the name of Maxine Barry, are now available from Corazon Books. IMPOSTERS In PARADISE, and HEART OF FIRE are both out, and others will very quickly become available in the future.

Her first foray into writing ‘spooky’ crime, (and written under the pen name of Jessie Daniels) comes out in November 2017. THE LAVENDER LADY CASEFILE is published by Robert Hale, an imprint of Crowood Press.

As Joyce Cato, she writes more classically-inspired ‘proper’ whodunits. So if you like an amateur sleuth, plenty of clues and red herrings, plus a baffling murder mystery to solve, these are the books for you.

She is a long-standing friend of her immediate superior officer, ‘Mellow’ Mallow and enjoys a rather enigmatic relationship with the steely Superintendent Marcus Donleavy. Popular with the rank and file for her no-nonsense attitude and competence.

DCI Philip ‘Mellow’ Mallow
Mel appreciates Hillary’s first-rate ability to solve her cases, and isn’t happy about her harassment by the officers from York. Known for his sartorial elegance and laid-back manners, he has a sharp mind, and an eye for the ladies. A good friend and ally for Hillary in her recent tribulations, he’s determined to keep his best investigator focused on the problems at hand.

BOOK REVIEW: Shoeless Child by J. A. Schneider

Shoeless Child by J. A. Schneider

‘An emotionally charged story of murder, lies, secrets and manipulation that had me hooked in from the very first sentence.’  – Nicki

Available from: Amazon UK Amazon US

The Shoeless Child coverA little boy has seen a horrific murder but is too traumatized to speak. Detective Kerri Blasco struggles to connect with him…

Charlie Sparkes peeks out to see his mother and another young woman brutally shot. Hysterical, the brave child bolts into the cold November night for help. He screams and cries, only to fall into more trauma.

Homicide Detective Kerri Blasco is called to the murder scene. One woman lies dead next to the blood soaked rug where Rachel Sparkes was seriously wounded. With little memory of the attack, she has been taken to the hospital – but where is her child? He too, Kerri discovers, now lies in a hospital bed, mute and traumatized in a fetal position, refusing even food and water.

Charlie must have seen what happened. Kerri’s heart aches for this piteous little boy and she struggles to help him; struggles, too to find the monster who did this horrible crime. “It’s your kind of case,” Sergeant Alex Brand, Kerri’s boss and partner tells her, stepping up police urgency when another innocent is shot, and then another.

Kerri Blasco finds herself more emotionally obsessed with this case than with any other, despite clear and onrushing danger to herself…

My Review

I love Crime Fiction in particular Psychological Thrillers.  I like the suspense, trying to work out the unsub and complex characters.  I also like there to be a human interest aspect something I can learn about.  I don’t like great big chunks of descriptive text.  When reading a series I prefer to read them in sequence but if this is not possible then they also need to work as stand-alone but without a lot of reverting back to previous books that might bore a reader who has read the previous books.  This book ticks every single box.

Charlie witnessed a horrific murder and is traumatised.  His mum is badly injured and her friend dead.  The only witness is a 5 year old child who is too scared to speak.  The book takes the reader on a journey to bring Charlie back and this is done with great compassion and realism.  Heart-rending at times and heart-warming at others – brilliantly done.

Kerri – what can I say?  I really, really want to learn more about her but this book does give a really good insight into her character and Alex is the perfect partner.  All the characters are realistic and have depth.  I love how Kerri connects to Charlie.

There are many twists and turns as Alex and Kerri explore dead ends and red herrings.  With more people dying the race is on to find the killer before he finishes the job and the adrenaline keeps pumping throughout the book to a complete shocker of an ending.

An absolutely rivetting book I will be reading the back list asap.

Well worth the 5 stars and I thank Joyce for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
