JOFFE BOOKS – 1st in series Blog Event #2

Today I am spotlighting the first book in the ‘Fens’ series by Joy Ellis.  This is a long running series with 9 books released and more on the way.  The 1st in this brilliant series is CRIME ON THE FENS which was released in June 2016 (and I am still frantically trying to find time to read these back lists)

Crime on the Fens (DI Nikki Galena #1)

Available from: Amazon UK Amazon US Amazon Australia Amazon Canada

The town is being terrorised by gangs of violent thugs, all wearing identical hideous masks. Then a talented young female student goes missing on the marsh and Nikki and Joseph find themselves joining forces with a master criminal in their efforts to save her. They need to look behind the masks, but when they do, they find something more sinister and deadly than they ever expected . . .

This is an exciting and absorbing crime thriller that you won’t be able to put down from start to thrilling finish

DI Nikki Galena series

Book 1: CRIME ON THE FENS
Book 2: SHADOW OVER THE FENS
Book 3: HUNTED ON THE FENS
Book 4: KILLER ON THE FENS
Book 5: STALKER ON THE FENS
Book 6: CAPTIVE ON THE FENS
Book 7: BURIED ON THE FENS
Book 8: THIEVES ON THE FENS
Book 9: FIRE ON THE FENS

THE DETECTIVE
DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on criminals but fiercely loyal to her team.

HER PARTNER
DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has a daughter and an ex-wife who wants his attention.

THE SETTING
The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

BLOG TOUR: Phobia by Stewart Giles

Today it is my stop on the Blog Tour for the relaunch of PHOBIA.  This is an introduction to the DS Jason Smith series and consists of 5 short stories and is a brilliant way to catch up with Jason’s early years.

Phobia CoverPhobia: Five disturbing early DS Smith cases (DS Jason Smith Detective Thriller)

AN ESSENTIAL INTRODUCTION TO THE DS SMITH THRILLER SERIES.

Available from Amazon

Phobia is a series of five DS Jason Smith cases he worked on before we met him in the first book ‘Smith’. We get insights into what moulded him into the Detective Sergeant we first get a glimpse of in ‘Smith’. Smith quickly realizes that police work isn’t always cut and dry. Justice is not always black and white; there are many shades of grey in between.

My Review

I am a big fan of Stewart’s books they are easy to read and are a little bit different (but I can’t put my finger on why) and I have LOVED every single one. So I was very excited to be reading this book.

I have to say this is an absolutely brilliant way of bringing the reader up to date with the time before Smith became a DS.  I haven’t seen this done before we usually get snippets throughout the series that you need to put together or a prequel novella so this was an enlightening breath of fresh air.

I also need to add that I am not a fan of short stories I like a book I can get stuck in to.  I usually find that short stories don’t give enough insight into the characters or depth to the story.  Here, again, Stewart has excelled himself.  Each of the 5 stories is gripping and interesting absolutely no padding these are straight down the line detective stories.

I wont say much about the stories as they are short and I don’t want to spoil them for anyone.

Smith: well he grows and develops in each story and we learn more about his character and history but most of all about him and his unique talent for putting together the clues quickly and effectively.  He is a realistic, compassionate character that can ‘read’ people very well and I am looking forward to following his career and personal life.

Absolutely brilliant and well worth the 5 stars.

After reading English & Drama at three different English Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling and finally ended up in South Africa, where I still live. I enjoy the serene life running a boat shop on the banks of the Vaal Dam. I came up with the DS Jason Smith idea after my wife dropped a rather large speaker on my head. Whether it was intentional still remains a mystery. Smith, the first in the series was finished in September 2013 and was closely followed by Boomerang and Ladybird. Occam’s Razor, Harlequin and Phobia (a series of short stories detailing Smith’s early life) were all completed in one hazy 365 days and Selene was done and dusted a few months later.

Today I am delighted to be kicking off the Blog Tour for Catching Love when it Falls. This is the first book in the Future Movers series and I am sharing with you Deryn’s rationale for the book/series.

#GuestPost – Future Movers Rationale

The  rationale for ‘Catching Love When it Falls’ developed from the public discussions across all media about the genetic modification of plants, adding genes to prevent diseases and changing the way the plants react. There were for and against opinions; and so The Future Movers Series was born.

I wondered what the consequences would be if a rogue group of scientists placed animal genes into human embryos. From this premise rose the following questions:

Who would do this and proclaim a legal right to do so?

Who would carry these children to full term and who care for them?

What types of talents could they have?

If they mingled with the normal populations what would people think?

How could they live a normal life with their unusual features and talents?

I had to answer all these questions as I developed my stories, plus any questions that arose along the way. I set the series in the future to make all this possible.

Therefore,  I created the Defense Department as the legal breeders; their excuse being the children’s extraordinary talents could be used in defense of the country (i.e. New Zealand and Australia) and although not mentioned in each book surrogate mothers were tricked into carrying the embryos thinking they were helping infertile couples.

Then I needed a place for the children to be reared, so the Nursery was created. A time limit was also needed so that the children could be released for adoption into the general public if they appeared normal by the age of seven. As conscription into life-long service in the Defense Dpartment was considered a prison sentence the children began to hide their talents.

Throughout the series more details are revealed but the whole rationale holds together really well.

I also had a heap of fun coming up with the talents some of the Nursery’s residents develop from the cocktail of genes some of them received.
