BLOG TOUR – Her Last Breath by Charlie Gallagher @joffebooks @gloriouscharlie #georgeelms #herlastbreath #netgalley #kindleunlimited #policeprocedural #crimefiction #detectivebook

Today is my stop on the BLOG TOUR for HER LAST BREATH by Charlie Gallager.  I am, in all honesty, very sad to be sharing this guest post.  I have not yet read all the George Elms books.  I joined the party with End Game and the previous 3 are on my kindle awaiting a gap. BUT, I did feel a connection to George from the very beginning.  Charlie did say that this would be the LAST George Elms but I always hoped he might change his mind.  Her Last Breath is a heartbreakingly awesome read and a fitting tribute to a special character.  Read on to hear why Charlie decided the time was right for George to walk away from his Police work…..

#GUESTPOST by Charlie Gallagher – ‘Why I retired George Elms’

‘Her Last Breath’ is the last book to feature George Elms. For readers that have followed his journey from the beginning I am hoping this is something you will understand, maybe even be a little bit relieved about!

Because George has had a tough time. In his seven novels he has been blown up, shot at, dragged through a car window, he has battled alcoholism, shot two of his best friends, shattered his ankle in a car crash, been tasered, gone to prison, come out of prison, tortured a man to death, seen his family split up and move away and nearly lost his mind trying to get it all back together again. And most recently of course he was forced to talk a woman out of throwing her cat at him while trying to get a cup of tea to go with his Jammy Dodgers.

It’s been a busy few years.

The plan for George originally was three books. That turned into four. Then I started writing ‘Missing’ and I got to the point where I needed a detective sergeant to be introduced to push the story on. Originally this was someone else. It was supposed to be a bit-part but the story was starting to fizz out and I suddenly didn’t know where to go next. Then I tried bringing George in to be the DS that gets involved and the book took back off. I wrote the rest of that book as fast as I could type it!

‘Then She Ran’ was when I knew George was coming up for retirement. He became difficult to work with, suspicious of everyone and believing he was the only person who was doing any decent police work. He’d always had a bit of that about him, but it peaked in this book and he became a little more difficult to like – and he started to hurt the people around him that he truly cared about. I couldn’t write him any other way, you get to know these characters really well and that was just the way he was going. His saving grace throughout was his absolute dedication to catching criminals. That never wavered. He did whatever it took to get the right result and I can tell you from first hand experience that there are not enough police officers left like that. Coppers like George simply couldn’t survive in modern day policing.

As I knew ‘Her Last Breath’ was going to see George walking away, I wanted to be sure it was a case that would hit him hard, hard enough for someone like him to realise that it just wasn’t what he wanted to do anymore. Not if he had a chance at a ‘normal’ life. I was very happy with the book, I think people will excuse him for calling time. And I think it was George at his best.

So what next? I have seen a lot of feedback, a lot of lovely reviews and the books are really picking up – and it’s all focussed on George. People seem to really like him, which is incredible. It’s so important to have readers routing for your lead. This then, is perhaps a silly time to be moving on – but I don’t think so. I have a brand new series. Everything I learned from George and the eight books so far will help with the new series. The first book is done, the tone and the themes are the same, I have a new lead – DS Maddie Ives and in her first ever scene she steps on a baddie’s crutch and lingers long enough to leave her mark. I love her already. I sincerely hope you will too.

I’ve had a lot of questions about whether George will come back in the future. Right now I don’t think so. But I do miss him already!

Thanks so much to everyone who has been in touch about George – or the books in general. There has been a real positive vibe and it really motivates me to keep working. I know all the Joffe authors feel the same. Thank you for all your support.

And to George – happy retirement! And thanks for all the memories.

Discover a crime thriller which will have you gripped from the explosive start to one of the most shocking endings of the year.

Henry Roberts is a serial killer. He has a type — young, blonde, attractive women. He is three years into a life sentence.

Two of his victims were never found.

Now, Henry Roberts is dying. He wants to make a deal. Move him to a secure unit by the sea and he will tell the police where the other victims’ remains are.

The offer is accepted and Detective George Elms travels to the force who led the original investigation. He is the messenger. He finds a police force and a community still shattered. As he reviews the old case notes he also learns something else. Henry Roberts didn’t work alone.

A woman goes missing. She fits the profile of the other victims. The circumstances of her disappearance do too — she never made it from her commuter train to her car.

Then a second woman goes missing. George is convinced they are linked. Henry Roberts told him on his prison visit that two is better because: you can make the other one watch.

Time running out for George. He is convinced that Henry Roberts knows who he should be chasing, but will he help before he takes his last breath? Or the women take theirs?

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Mark Billingham.
