‘He Is Watching You’ is superbly written.  Charlie entices you in to the story and before you know it you just can’t escape his clutches.  The story is written from three different perspectives- that of Harry, that of Maddie and that of the killer himself.   Read more here

This is an action-packed page-turner. What the killer does to the woman in the container had my hair standing on end … I expect nightmares when I turn off the lights tonight. Nevertheless, I will be watching for more of Ives and Baker. Read more here

By the Letter Book Reviews

The story grabs the readers attention from the start. The killer is definitely sick and twisted and there seems to be no bound to how low they will stoop. I loved the build up to the killer being identified and as with any good crime thriller, it becomes a race against time, sending the pace of the story to full throttle.  Read more here

A young woman’s body is left in a metal container in a remote location. The killer is careful to position her under a camera that links to his smartphone. He likes to look back at his work.

#BookReview DARK HOUSES by Helen Durrant #crimefiction @joffebooks @hhdurrant

Today I would like to share with you my review of DARK HOUSES by Helen Durrant.  This is book 2 in the fantastic DI Greco series.

DARK HOUSES a gripping detective thriller full of suspense by [DURRANT, HELEN H.]DARK HOUSES (DI Greco #2) by Helen H Durrant

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

A young woman is found brutally murdered in an empty house
Detective Stephen Greco and his team must piece together her life as quickly as possible. Within twenty-four hours there is another horrific murder using the same method. The detectives realise that the victims are random but the locations are not. The killer is more concerned with finding the right house – somewhere he won’t be disturbed as he pursues his evil plan.

When a man walks into the station and confesses, it looks like the case is closed. But Greco’s not convinced and soon he’ll be fighting to save the woman who’s most important to him in a stunningly tense and emotional conclusion.

Can Greco keep himself and his team under control as the criminal gets personal?

DARK HOUSES is the second book in a new series of detective thrillers featuring D.I. Greco. Stephen Greco has moved to Oldston after his wife divorced him. He doesn’t like the place much but he wants to stay close to their daughter, Matilda. He is a meticulous policeman with a touch of O.C.D. Easy to admire, but difficult to like.

The series is set in the fictional industrial northern English town of Oldston.

My Review

I have a list of authors whose books I can pick up to read knowing that I have a few hours of gripping, adrenaline pumping entertainment in store and Helen Durrant is pretty high up that list.  So when I was in danger of losing my reading mojo I went in search of her back list and downloaded Dark Houses.  Yes, okay I hold my hands up I meant to download the first in the series which is Dark Murder but no matter they work perfectly as stand alone.

In an empty house the body of a pretty girl is discovered.  Rape, torture the victim had horrific injuries and Greco has his work cut out.  The killer is forensically aware so there is no evidence it is on a low income estate so everyone ‘seen nothing, heard nothing’  Add into the mix a schizophrenic young man and things are starting to get really complicated.

Greco is trying to rebuild his relationship with his ex wife while working his way through his OCD issues and is feeling a little insecure.  Speedy is disillusioned with life and work and Grace has a crush on Greco.  Can the team clear their heads enough to pick up and run with the tiny bits of clues that are available before more young women die?

There are many twists and turns as the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride full of edge-of-your-seat suspense all the way to an ending that is mind blowing.

Another absolutely fantastic read from a very talented author.

ADVENT BOOK BLOG Jan-2018 (1) – The Shoeless Child by J.A. Schneider

Today is the first day of my ADVENT BOOK BLOG. Each day I will be spotlighting a release from each month in 2018 so Day 1 & 2 will be January, 3 & 4 February etc. Today the book in the spotlight is SHOELESS CHILD this is a book that has stayed in my memory all through the year it is a brilliant read that had me in tears at times.

Shoeless Child: A heart-stopping thriller (Detective Kerri Blasco Book 4) by [Schneider, J.A.]Shoeless Child by J.A. Schneider

Available from Amazon UK   US   AU   CA

A little boy has seen a horrific murder but is too traumatized to speak. Detective Kerri Blasco struggles to connect with him…

Charlie Sparkes peeks out to see his mother and another young woman brutally shot. Hysterical, the brave child bolts into the cold November night for help. He screams and cries, only to fall into more trauma.

Homicide Detective Kerri Blasco is called to the murder scene. One woman lies dead next to the blood soaked rug where Rachel Sparkes was seriously wounded. With little memory of the attack, she has been taken to the hospital – but where is her child? He too, Kerri discovers, now lies in a hospital bed, mute and traumatized in a fetal position, refusing even food and water.

Charlie must have seen what happened. Kerri’s heart aches for this piteous little boy and she struggles to help him; struggles, too to find the monster who did this horrible crime. “It’s your kind of case,” Sergeant Alex Brand, Kerri’s boss and partner tells her, stepping up police urgency when another innocent is shot, and then another.

Kerri Blasco finds herself more emotionally obsessed with this case than with any other, despite clear and onrushing danger to herself…

My Review

I love Crime Fiction in particular Psychological Thrillers.  I like the suspense, trying to work out the unsub and complex characters.  I also like there to be a human interest aspect something I can learn about.  I don’t like great big chunks of descriptive text.  When reading a series I prefer to read them in sequence but if this is not possible then they also need to work as stand-alone but without a lot of reverting back to previous books that might bore a reader who has read the previous books.  This book ticks every single box.

Charlie witnessed a horrific murder and is traumatised.  His mum is badly injured and her friend dead.  The only witness is a 5 year old child who is too scared to speak.  The book takes the reader on a journey to bring Charlie back and this is done with great compassion and realism.  Heart-rending at times and heart-warming at others – brilliantly done.

Kerri – what can I say?  I really, really want to learn more about her but this book does give a really good insight into her character and Alex is the perfect partner.  All the characters are realistic and have depth.  I love how Kerri connects to Charlie.

There are many twists and turns as Alex and Kerri explore dead ends and red herrings.  With more people dying the race is on to find the killer before he finishes the job and the adrenaline keeps pumping throughout the book to a complete shocker of an ending.

An absolutely rivetting book I will be reading the back list asap.

Well worth the 5 stars and I thank Joyce for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
