Linda Strong Book Reviews

This is the second in this series, and it’s an entertaining read. Jenny is a jewel … I love her attitude and her outlook on life. The mystery itself is a good one, although I figured out the why … but I wasn’t as sure of the who. It’s well written, engaging, full of interesting characters …including the goose and the Pooch … and I look forward to see where Jenny goes from here.

Joanna Larum’s Reviews

I did enjoy the building of the characters, even the goose and the dog. In fact, the dog seemed to have more about him than the detectives.  This is a very cosy read and would be perfect for a winter’s evening.

Black Books Blog

This is the second book in the Jenny Starling series, and this time Jenny has paused her catering business due to no customers and started working for a family as a chef over the Christmas period.  Read more here

Herding Cats

The Winter Mystery is story telling at it’s best.  It’s simple but riveting and completely demands reader participation.  I’m often drawn into books and imagine myself as one of the characters but with Faith Martin’s books it’s as though I’m watching a Sunday afternoon detective T.V. programme and I love that I can just get lost in the fun of playing amateur detective.  Read more here

On The Shelf Reviews

Overall the winter mystery a Christmassy cosy whodunnit that I’d recommend for those who love a more light-hearted mystery.  Read more here

Jen Meds Book Reviews

This is the second book in the Jenny Starling series but it can work very well as a stand-alone. Jenny is a no nonsense cook for hire who seems to have a knack for solving murders.   Read more here

I love whodunnits and this is a satisfying read with enough characters and twists to keep any mystery fan happy!  Read more here

Picturesque village life, busy bodies and murder, what more could I ask for? A full cast of characters with wit, and intelligence to boot, it’s a good read. I was kept guessing right until the end, which thrilled me no end. I love it when I don’t know how it’s going to end.  Read more here

I could very well sum what I think about the book in one word: BRILLIANT!  I can’t get enough of this character! And the setting this time is amazing too! You guys are going to love this book!  Read more here

#BookReview – Killer on the Fens (Nikki Galena #4) by Joy Ellis #crimefiction #detective #teamjoffebooks @joffebooks

Killer on the FensKiller on the Fens (Nikki Galena #4)

Available from AMAZON

DI Nikki Galena faces a personal challenge which will stretch her to the limit. She must fulfil her father’s dying wish and discover who the mysterious Eve is. Meanwhile a dead drug dealer is found on an abandoned airfield that the locals say is haunted. The trail of both mysteries will lead to the most shocking discovery of Nikki’s career and put her whole team in mortal danger.

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the shocking ending.

THE DETECTIVE DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she’s seen a girl die in her arms and her own family destroyed. She’s tough on the criminals who she thinks did this to her.

HER PARTNER DS Joseph Easter is the squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname “Holy Joe” belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

THE SETTING The Lincolnshire Fens: great open skies brood over marshes, farmland, and nature reserves. It is not easy terrain for the Fenland Constabulary to police, due to the distances between some of the remote Fen villages, the dangerous and often misty lanes, and the poor telephone coverage. There are still villages where the oldest residents have never set foot outside their own farmland and a visit to the nearest town is a major event. But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

My Review

I am very pleased I finally found time to catch up with back lists from some of my favourite authors. I first found the Fens series with Buried on the Fens so I can confirm that the books do work perfectly as stand alone. However, there are back stories to the characters and it is these that I was eager to learn about.

Nikki Galena has more tragedy in her life as her Dad passes away. His last request was to find Eve. Who is Eve and why was her Dad so determined that she should find him is only one question of many that Nikki has to find the answers to.

Joseph is her partner and he is trying to rebuild a relationship with his daughter Tamsin. He has been making little progress but in this book she comes to stay and Joseph has taken leave to spend time with her. But is it Joseph she wants to spend time with or is she more interested in the handsome Niall?

Now to the story. Now I really have no idea where Joy gets the ideas for these stories. Each one is totally unique and this one is no different. It revolves around an area of the Fens that is a disused military base on an area that is dangerously marshy and affected by tides. Lights and noises have been seen and heard by several people and rumour is that these are ghosts of the fens but the realistic Nikki thinks differently.

When a small time crook falls down a shaft and another youth goes missing the team are on the case to try to find out what is going on. What they find is a lot of secrets that link back to Nikki’s father’s past. Having to rely on a self formed group of Historical people who have secrets of their own and the team are looking through an entangled mesh of lies and secrets but what they find is so unbelievably unexpected that they are all left reeling.

This is a fast paced journey through a tangled web of lies and secrets with a liberal helping of twists, turns and dead ends that had me turning page after page. Another fantastic addition to the bestselling Nikki Galena series.

5 golden stars from me

ICYMI – The Burning Men (Detective Ray Paterson #3) by Steve Parker. @joffebooks @mrparkerspen #crimefiction #detective #TeamJoffeBooks

In Case You Missed It I am reblogging THE BURNING MEN (Ray Paterson #3) by Steve Parker. This is an adrenaline pumping read that will have the pages turning right to the end.

THE BURNING MEN (Detective Ray Paterson #3) by Steve Parker

Available from AMAZON

Discover a crime thriller full of shocking twists by one of the most exciting new authors you’ll read this year.

The man burnt alive is Davey Caine. He is the heir to the criminal empire created by his father, William ‘Billy’ Caine. Billy is a notorious and violent gangster with total control of South East London. But he’s not the man he used to be and the sharks smell blood in the water.

Detectives Ray Paterson and Johnny Clocks must find the killer before Billy extracts his own brand of justice. They find themselves drawn ever deeper into London’s underworld.

The streets explode into violence and the body count rises. Men are shot and burned alive in a tit-for-tat power struggle between rival gangs.

Detectives Ray Paterson and Johnny Clocks find themselves trying to control men of extreme viciousness. Men who have no fear of the law and its consequences and who are unafraid to kill anyone who stands in their way — including police detectives.

Paterson is stunned when he’s offered the chance to stop the conflict dead in its tracks. If he ignores it, the mayhem continues. If he takes it, there will be a price to pay.

What he doesn’t know is that the price will come with hidden and devastating consequences.

This is the third in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth.

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Martina Cole.

Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson is a young and (thanks to family money) wealthy womaniser, separated from his model wife and tipped to be the youngest ever commissioner of police. He knows he’s weak when it comes to practical policing and struggles to find a place among his peers, desperate to be a good policeman and not just a ‘climber’.

Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks is a foul-mouthed, working-class officer. He grew up surrounded by rogues and villains to become a first-class thief taker with the Met police. However, his childish attitude has short-circuited his career and he spends his days antagonising as many people as he can.

Steve Parker is a retired police officer who served for 20 years in numerous high-profiles squads.

Bermondsey is an area of London nestled on the banks of the River Thames. It once had a reputation for housing more armed robbers, murderers and career criminals than anywhere else in the country. Now one of the most upmarket places to live and work in London, it has all but severed itself from its working-class roots. Home to the iconic Tower Bridge and crammed with expensive apartments, art galleries, fancy restaurants and famous residents. But for the police, those who truly know, Bermondsey never lost its roots . . . or its reputation.

My Review

Firstly, thank you to Joffe Books for the advance digital copy of this book. This is my unbiased review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Paterson and Clocks are back so I settled down for a few hours of adrenaline pumping reading and I was not disappointed. Steve Parker is not for the faint-hearted but if you love the grit and gore of crime fiction then this is an author that is right up your street.

The story begins with a man being burned alive. He is soon revealed to be the son of a gangster and so begins a war to gain control of the London underworld. Paterson and Clocks are not amused and set out to bring an end to the violence by whatever means they see fit.

I do love this pair. They balance each other out perfectly and we get to know them a little more each book and they are balance by other team members who we also get to know more about.

Humour, corruption, drugs, violence, twists, turns and curve balls this book has it all. An absolutely brilliant read ticked all my boxes and I am now eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

What the bloggers thought:

Black Books Blog

Overall I loved this book, although it may be a bit gruesome for some people. The story had me hooked throughout as I tried to work out how the two of them would stop the murders. I also really like the chemistry between Paterson and Clocks, and they way they work together and bring the best out of each other is brilliant. Read more here

Books From Dusk Till Dawn

This story builds in momentum at every chapter with the two detectives pushing to the ultimate limit of the law and beyond. The story line was superb with an outcome that I didn’t guess, but I must admit that the ending tickled me in some twisted way. A cracking book, I must read more of this pair of detectives, they have me intrigued. Read more here

This is the third in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth. This easily reads as a stand alone, but there are just a few spoilers from the first two books. As always, I recommend starting at the very beginning.  Read more here

Oh my giddy aunt ‘The Burning Men’ is one hell of a fantastic book that had me on the edge of my seat all the way through.  The story starts in such a way that I am not likely to forget in a hurry.  For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained the pace throughout.  The author tempts you into the book and then refuses to let you go.   Read more here

Author Bio

I was born and raised in South East London (Peckham to be precise – cushty, my son). At the ripe old age of twenty-one, I joined the Metropolitan Police where I served for twenty years before I was pensioned out with a serious back injury. I then went to work as an enforcement officer for a local authority before taking redundancy.

Thankfully, I’ve been blessed with a complete lack of DIY skills so was legitimately able to get away with swanning around the house doing bugger all, all day long. Finding myself with plenty of spare time and a deep desire to never work for anyone again, I gave myself permission to go back to writing (I’d been writing on and off for years).

When I’m not writing, I’m out taking photographs, something I’ve done since I was a nipper and will do until the day I shuffle off this mortal coil.

I live down in the windier part of East Sussex near the sea with my long-suffering wife and my ‘off-her-nut’ cockerpoo. I have two sons of whom I am so proud, I cannot begin to tell you.
