Joanna Larum’s Reviews

This is a wonderfully written crime novel, with lots of clues leading in different directions. Once again, I was unable to work out the ending before I reached it but I couldn’t put the book down until I had reached that end. A must for any lover of police procedural novels and a five star read! Read more here

This one is full of action with solid police procedures throughout. Although 9th in this well-known series, it reads easily as a stand alone. There are twists and turns that lead to a very surprising ending.  Read more here

Helen has one of those writing styles that draws you in from the first word on the first page and she constantly dangles enough bait to keep you interested in the story and makes you feel desperate to find out who is doing what to whom and why.  That’s what happened to me anyway.  I was gripped by the story all the way through.  Read more here

The way the book switches between each case ensures you never know what is going to happen next and kept me hooked trying to work it all out. The plot is very well written and the way the two stories intermingle made it a very captivating and enjoyable read. Read more here

Helen has absolutely cracked it for me personally, as she has fully rounded the main characters to a depth that I love! The cases within the story are switched from one to another so you have no idea where it will go and the twists make it such an ending!!! I loved it! Definitely one to read! Read more here

On The Shelf Reviews

Helen Durrant blends three storylines together seamlessly, none of them overshadowing the other, with a good pace and plenty of twists and turns along the way.  I also love Bayliss and Calladine, they’re such likeable characters, even though Calladine is back to his old ways, not committing to yet another relationship. I have hopes he’ll settle down one day!   Read more here

Looking for a brilliant best-selling crime mystery with great detectives?

Detective Calladine and Bayliss hunt for a missing child in a mystery with a shocking ending.

With two more murders and Calladine’s personal life in turmoil, the detectives face against time to find “Street” and the missing child.

In an ending with a huge twist, the detectives find everything they believed is turned upside down.

If you like Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, Mel Sherratt, Ruth Rendell, or Mark Billingham you will enjoy this exciting new crime fiction writer.
DEAD GUILTY is book nine of a new series of detective thrillers featuring D.S. Ruth Bayliss and D.I. Tom Calladine.

Tom Calladine is a detective inspector who is devoted to his job. His personal life, however, is not so successful. Having been married and divorced before the age of twenty-one has set a pattern that he finds difficult to escape.

Ruth Bayliss is in her mid-thirties, plain-speaking but loyal. She is balancing her professional life with looking after a small child.

The fictional village of Leesdon on the outskirts of an industrial northern English city. There is little work and a lot of crime. The bane of Calladine’s life is the Hobfield housing estate, breeding ground to all that is wrong with the area that he calls home.

My Review

This is book 9 in the Calladine & Bayliss series but it does work well as stand alone.

A missing 3 year old child, Drugs, vigilantes, burglaries and murder.  Calladine and his team are really up against it.  When a fellow Detective has a heart attack Calladine finds the whole lot is for his team to investigate.

There is a lot going on in this book as the team buckle down to start following leads.  They are getting nowhere fast.  Who is the elusive Street and why are the criminals they have arrested being released?  It smacks of corruption and when Calladine is ordered to back off investigating Street his worst fears are realised.

Reading this series is a bit like coming home. Familiar characters but you always learn something new and the advantage of these books is Helen is such a brilliant author she manages to write the books so you can step in at any point in the series and quickly catch up.  No repetitive text to bore the readers who are following the series but enough to fill in blanks for new readers.

This is a twisty turny book that I simply couldn’t put down there are real shockers all the way through and it is packed with suspense to keep the adrenaline pumping.  WOW what an awesome read and when it gets towards the end and the clues start to link the different threads you think you have worked out what the ending is going to be…..  Wrong!  The ending is a total unexpected mind blowing shock.

An absolutely brilliant read that had me turning page after page.  5 golden stars from me.

OVER 750,000 books sold of her Calladine & Bayliss and DI Greco Series

I’m one of the ‘baby boomer’ generation. I was born in Edinburgh to an English father and Scottish mother. My father was from the North West of England and this was where the family settled.

I know the area well, both the good and the bad, and so I set my books here. Sitting between two counties, Lancashire and Yorkshire, and between the city and the hills, it offers a rich mix of the industrial and the countryside and all the character therein. I always planned to write crime novels — to create the characters in my books. Since my retirement from a busy teaching job in FE, this is what I’ve done — almost to exclusion of anything else!

I have a grown-up family and five grandchildren. They see me as something of an eccentric — always on my laptop writing away. Writing is something of a second career and, despite having a bus pass, keeps me busy, young and tuned in the world as it currently is.

I was on the edge of my seat as Mike Croft returns to find a ruthless serial killer. This kept me up late reading, and I kept thinking about it after I was finished. Jane Adams has created a strong cast of characters, and a really riveting plot.  Read more here

I was hooked on this book from the moment I read the synopsis, never mind from when I began to read.  By the time I got to the bottom of the first page, I knew that reading the book would be an addiction and the book would prove to be unputdownable.   Read more here

The book is a bit different to normal as it is split in two parts, part one follows DI Croft as he investigates a string of rapes, all young, blond women with no links to each other. Whilst investigating this, the forensic team work out that there are in fact two rapists, the original one and then a copycat, which makes the whole case a lot trickier than normal.  Read more here

In book 2 of the series, I had warmed to Mike as a lead character and part 2 of this book firmly puts his personal life in the spotlight as it is affected directly by the case. The latter part also focuses on the personal life and childhood of the killer which contrasts with the happy life of the child he snatches.  Read more here

Their Final Moments (Detective Mike Croft #3) by Jane Adams

Available from AMAZON

Please note this was first published as “Fade to Grey” and “Final Frame.”

DECEMBER: Detective Mike Croft is in pursuit of a serial attacker whose victims are all young blonde women.

But forensics on the victims reveals an even more horrific scenario.

Many miles away, in Wiltshire, a young woman dies in a burning car.

In Norwich, an actress is found dead in her own home and a teenage boy runs away from a past he doesn’t know how to face.

Can DI Mike Croft work out what links these events?

Then a greater threat emerges.

JAKE BOWEN: filmmaker and serial murderer. There is no pattern to his victims. He doesn’t care who dies, so long as their final moments make good film, and Jake is very imaginative in deciding how his victims will die.

THEIR FINAL MOMENTS: An epic and unputdownable crime thriller full of heart-stopping twists and turns.

Perfect for fans of Kimberley Chambers, Damien Boyd, Rachel Abbott, Patricia Gibney or Mark Billingham.

Praise for JANE ADAMS, author of the sensational best seller THE GREENWAY.

“Few debut novels achieve this level of suspense. The Greenway lingered in my mind for days. It takes the psychological suspense novel into new realms of mystery.” Val McDermid, Manchester Evening News

“A haunting debut.” Minette Walters

Compellingly told and rich with psychological insight.” Independent

Nail-biting stuff.” Ms London

“An assured first novel, with a strong cast and a plot which twists and turns without a glitch.” Yorkshire Evening Post

Book 1: The Greenway
Book 2: The Secrets
Book 3: Their Final Moments

My Review

This is book 3 in the Detective Mike Croft series that is being republished by Joffe Books and I have read all of them.  However, it will work perfectly as stand alone so if you haven’t read the previous books it wont be a problem.

Dead bodies are being discovered but with nothing to link them no common factors in the murder method and eventually it is discovered there is more than one murderer.  Add the fact that the murders are being carried out in various locations up and down the country and Mike Croft has his work cut out trying to join some dots and find a way forward.

The characters continue to gain depth and are all complex and realistic.  There is plenty of suspense built in to the story especially when people close to Mike get dragged in to the tangled web.

This was a really good read, however, I did find a little complicated and slow going in places.  That said I am still looking forward to future books in this series.

Jane Adams Author Bio

Why do I write?

Like most writers, it’s a kind of compulsion. The stories are there and I have to try and grab hold of them and pin them onto the page. Most of the time, I enjoy the process; sometimes, I’d rather be doing just about anything else, up to and including the ironing – and I hate ironing.

I started writing when my youngest child went to school. I was incredibly lucky and my first novel, The Greenway, was picked up by Macmillan in 1994 and published in 1995.

I currently write two series; Naomi Blake and Rina Martin. Rina was a character I’d had in mind for years before committing her to paper. An elderly, ex thespian who had played the part of a popular TV detective, she had retired to the seaside and bought a boarding house for other ex performers. Rina’s feisty, no nonsense character is, I suppose, based on the rather powerful and opinionated ladies I grew up surrounded by – mother, teachers in the all girls school I attended, aunts and pseudo aunts, all of whom had opinions about everything and made sure these were unstintingly shared.

Naomi Blake, on the other hand, was the brainchild of my late agent, Bob Tanner at International Scripts. ‘You should write a blind detective,’ he said ‘ and she needs a big, black guidedog, called Napoleon’.

I thought it was a daft idea, and told him so. I just couldn’t see how to do it. But, like a lot of seemingly daft ideas, this one wormed its was into my brain and I realised he was right. It could work and so, the Naomi Blake series came into being.

I have always written in other genres too, short stories in the SF, Fantasy and Gothic Horror genre, and am working on longer projects when time allows. I also teach Creative Writing and have had the great priviligde of being a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at three different universities.
