A Story That Will Leave You Gasping For Breath
It’s been five years since Mackenzie Darroch was abducted and held captive in a derelict house.
She thought she’d found her way out of the darkness. She was wrong.
When she witnesses a car crash and saves the driver’s life, it sets in motion a chain of events that will alter both their futures. The two women get involved in a high profile police case and draw the attention of a ruthless reporter.
Gina Calvi is convinced Mackenzie is not what she appears and is prepared to do anything to prove it.Meanwhile, across the city, Kirsty McBride, a young single mother, is persuaded to leave a violent relationship. Her partner, Malkie Boyle a Glasgow hardman, is due to be released from prison. Once back on the street and bent on revenge, Boyle is determined to find the people responsible for stealing his family from him.
Can Mackenzie save them or will Boyle get his revenge?
‘An electrifying read from beginning to end’
‘A tense, taut thriller’
Mackenzie is a victim of domestic abuse who has managed to turn her experience into something positive and now runs a refuge for women, like herself, who are escaping the violence in their lives.
Life is ticking along nicely the refuge has been extended so she can help more women and she has no money worries so apart from the nightmares life is good. She is driving home one rainy night when she is overtaken by a powerful car that is going far too fast for the road and conditions. A little later she sees the car has crashed and goes to help dragging Caitlin from the wrecked car minutes before it explodes.
This even sets in motion a chain of events that effects all the women on some level. Secrets are kept and revenge is taken. As Mackenzie finds love she also knows how fragile this new love is if Andrew discovers her secrets.
I have read all Owen’s books and I had to smile when Charlie and Andrew popped up in this story. It brings something to the story if you know of the history behind the characters but having said that if you haven’t read the other books it wont affect your enjoyment of this one as the author has ensured this works perfectly as stand-alone.
The underlying storyline is domestic abuse but it isn’t graphic the violence is hinted at but left to the reader to envisage. However, the author has very realistically portrayed how far the abuser will go to keep their victim under their control even bringing friends and family into their abuse.
The characters are all unique individuals that we got to know in the book and I especially liked Caitlin and her devotion to Mackenzie. The other women of the refuge were all different and brought their own personalities to the book to contribute to the story.
The suspense runs all the way through the book and the ending – well WOW I didn’t see that coming.
A fast paced, adrenaline pumping read that is well worth the 5 stars.
A big thank you to Owen Mullen for the advance copy. This is my unbiased review.
