#GuestPost – Future Movers Rationale

The  rationale for ‘Catching Love When it Falls’ developed from the public discussions across all media about the genetic modification of plants, adding genes to prevent diseases and changing the way the plants react. There were for and against opinions; and so The Future Movers Series was born.

I wondered what the consequences would be if a rogue group of scientists placed animal genes into human embryos. From this premise rose the following questions:

Who would do this and proclaim a legal right to do so?

Who would carry these children to full term and who care for them?

What types of talents could they have?

If they mingled with the normal populations what would people think?

How could they live a normal life with their unusual features and talents?

I had to answer all these questions as I developed my stories, plus any questions that arose along the way. I set the series in the future to make all this possible.

Therefore,  I created the Defense Department as the legal breeders; their excuse being the children’s extraordinary talents could be used in defense of the country (i.e. New Zealand and Australia) and although not mentioned in each book surrogate mothers were tricked into carrying the embryos thinking they were helping infertile couples.

Then I needed a place for the children to be reared, so the Nursery was created. A time limit was also needed so that the children could be released for adoption into the general public if they appeared normal by the age of seven. As conscription into life-long service in the Defense Dpartment was considered a prison sentence the children began to hide their talents.

Throughout the series more details are revealed but the whole rationale holds together really well.

I also had a heap of fun coming up with the talents some of the Nursery’s residents develop from the cocktail of genes some of them received.

But it has a strange airy beauty to it, and above it all are the biggest skies you’ve ever seen.

My Thoughts

Every book I read by the phenomenal Joy Ellis has been absolutely first class.   She set a very high bar a few books back and I keep thinking that she wont be able to surpass that one but every time that bar goes a bit higher.

So here we are yet another absolutely brilliant addition to the Nikki Galena series.  A totally unique story-line that sets the heart racing at the beginning and the suspense builds steadily and increasingly throughout the story.  People are being burned to death and the clock is ticking will Nikki crack this one before another victim dies?

I love Nikki Galena she is a feisty caring character and every member of her team give 100% loyalty and that loyalty is returned in full.  Her personal life plays a big part in this story as she continues to build her relationship with her mother.  Eve and her band of friends bring a bit of humour and uniqueness to the book.  Nikki’s relationship with Joseph continues to deepen and everyone is holding their breath hoping that the powers that be don’t learn of it and throw a spanner in the works.

I cant find the words to do this book justice.  If you like Crime fiction, detective stories, psychological thrillers, police procedural ……  Then this is a must read.  If you like a good book then this is for you.

Absolutely brilliant I can’t wait for the next book.

1 million books sold and rising!

“I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the sixties and seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!

And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and our two second generation Springer spaniels. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I can, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre was suddenly clear. I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!”

Looking for a brilliant best-selling murder mystery with a feisty female detective?

DETECTIVE HILLARY GREENE IS BACK! And this time she’s going to solve the most difficult cold cases.

Hillary Greene returns to Thames Valley Police HQ, acting as a consultant for the Crime Review Team, looking into murders which the police have never been able to solve.

She wasn’t sure she wanted to go back. But solving crimes is irresistible for Hillary Greene. And it doesn’t hurt that her new boss is devastatingly handsome.

Twenty years ago, mother-of-three Anna McRae was found beaten to death in her kitchen with a rolling pin. She’d been having an affair with her brother-in-law, so the prime suspect was Anna’s sister Debbie.

However as Hillary digs deeper, more secrets and betrayals emerge. Who wanted Anna dead and can Hillary finally bring her justice?

Meanwhile, Hillary is distracted by an unknown admirer, who quickly seems to be going from suitor to stalker.

Can Hillary solve a fiendishly complex case from the past while fending off unwanted attention?

This is a crime mystery full of well-observed characters, which will have you gripped from start to the absolutely thrilling conclusion.

MURDER NEVER RETIRES is the twelfth in a series of page-turning crime thrillers set in Oxfordshire.

THE LOCATION
The village of Chesterton, just a few miles from the market town of Bicester. With recent development, the village (like many near large towns) is nowadays in danger of becoming a mere ‘suburb’ of its biggest neighbour. Especially since it’s a stones-throw from Bicester Village — the famous high-end designer-label shopping centre that brings large amounts of UK and foreign shoppers. But at the time of the original murder investigation, it was a village like many to be found in rural Oxfordshire. Surrounded by farmland, it was a peaceful, quiet location. Not the sort of place where you’d expect a shocking murder to happen

THE DETECTIVE
DI Hillary Greene
An attractive woman in her forties, Hillary Greene is a retired police detective. She had many years’ experience solving the toughest murder cases, and came up through the ranks. Consequently, she knows how the system works, and is fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. She was popular with the rank and file for her no-nonsense attitude and competence.

Guest Post

When you write a series of books, and readers really appreciate and invest in your central character, it is utterly heart-warming. And if feels as if something quite magical is happening.  And since last October, so many wonderful readers, reviewers and bloggers have posted about how much they enjoy reading the DI Hillary Greene novels, and how they felt as if they almost become a part of her team, following the leads along with her as they come in, and rooting for and her colleagues when times get rough. It’s as if they’re right there with her, solving the crimes and taking it personally when the ‘top brass’ do her down.  Which is great and how it should be!  As a reader myself, I know how important it is to really relate to the main protagonist and get involved on a personal basis with the storyline.  And so I’m always super-conscious, when writing, of that special bond between writer and reader, and the unspoken but always present commitment that I’m making, to try and write a book that they will approve of and enjoy.  And the more a character is loved, the more solemn – and sometimes terrifying- that responsiblity can be!

So when I was asked by my agent to think about writing a ‘retro’ crime book (since vintage is now very ‘in’ apparently!) I had to stop and think.  Of course, it’s so easy to say ‘No’ to something new.  Fear of the unknown isn’t something that just affects writers, after all.  But rising to a challenge always brings it’s own rewards, and stretching yourself as a writer is no bad thing (I hope!).  And so, after much deliberation with myself, I bit the bullet, and after 17 Hillary Greene books, started from scratch with two new protagonists.  Set in 1960’s Oxford, they had to solve crimes without the aid of mobile phones, the internet, or any of the amazing forensic services that DI Hillary Greene would take for granted.  Naturally, I’ve been very nervous about how this new venture would be received by my wonderful (and so far, very supportive) readers.  So you can imagine how relieved I am that nearly all of the early reviews are so  positive!  Mind you – this doesn’t mean that I won’t be biting my nails until A Fatal Obsession comes out on general release in June, and I can get proper feedback on what more of my readers make of WPC Trudy Loveday and Dr Clement Ryder!   I can only hope that they’re not disappointed.

In the meantime, however, books 12-17 of the DI Hillary Greene series are due to be released over the coming months – so die-hard DI Greene fans needn’t feel neglected!

Author photoAUTHOR BIO

Faith Martin has been writing for over 25 years, in four genres and under four different pen names. She was born in Oxford and sets most of her crime novels within sight of the city of dreaming spires. A real nature lover and afficionado of the countryside, descriptions of wildlife and native flora often find their way into her manuscripts. Right now, JOFFE BOOKS are re-issuing the DI Hillary Greene novels in new updated editions! The first 12 books in the series are available now.
Her romance novels, written under the name of Maxine Barry, are now available from Corazon Books. IMPOSTERS In PARADISE, and HEART OF FIRE are both out, and others will very quickly become available in the future.

Her first foray into writing ‘spooky’ crime, (and written under the pen name of Jessie Daniels) comes out in November 2017. THE LAVENDER LADY CASEFILE is published by Robert Hale, an imprint of Crowood Press.

As Joyce Cato, she writes more classically-inspired ‘proper’ whodunits. So, if you like an amateur sleuth, plenty of clues and red herrings, plus a baffling murder mystery to solve, these are the books for you.

BLOG TOUR: Then She Ran by Charlie Gallagher

Today I am very excited to be hosting a Guest Post as part of the Blog Tour for Then She Ran.  I asked Charlie Gallagher to talk about THEN SHE RAN his latest stand alone George Elms thriller:

Available from: Amazon UK  Amazon US  Amazon Australia  Amazon Canada

Then She Ran

I was very honoured to be asked to talk about my new book Then She Ran in a blog post.

I didn’t really know what I should say. But I thought I would talk about where the idea and plot came from for Then She Ran.

It all started with Stan. Stan plays the part of grieving pensioner in the book. Him and his wife are the victim of a burglary-gone-wrong and he ends up cradling her in his arms while her life slips away. They were married sixty-two years. He tells George Elms this fact and then lifts watery eyes and asks:

‘what do I do now? What do I do now?’

I remember my first ever night shift as a response copper. I’d just finished my classroom based training, I was a much younger man and I had no real idea about real life. And that exact thing happened. The end bit at least. In my case an elderly gentleman (not called Stan!) had woken in the night to find his wife of sixty-two years deceased next to him. He did what he could but he knew. He knew she was gone. Because he felt that part of him had gone too. He called the police and I turned up. The man seemed calm, but I know now it was shock. He told me how they met at a barn dance, how he was shy and she took hold of him and moved his hand onto her hip. He told me that he knew in that instant that he would love her forever. And then he stopped talking and his whole body sagged. He leant forward and then he looked up at me with those eyes and he said that line: What do I do now?

That man broke my heart that night. Nearly eleven years later and I can still see his face as clear as if he was still stood in front of me. How do you answer that? You can’t. No one can. But I learnt that night that being a police officer is so much more than arresting bad people for doing bad things. We cried together, me and that old fella. And we both meant it.

Stan then was the inspiration and I started with him. Writing a George Elms novel is never actually about George Elms; for me at least. I always come up with general outlines or characters away from him and then slot him in to drive the story on. This makes sense to me as I’ve come to know him so well that I know I can put him in any given situation, give him any role in any plot and I will know his dialogue, his movements and more importantly; his flaws. Of which there are many!

Stan was that starting point. The first linchpin. The second thing I had from the start was the lift scene. Although it was a general idea to start with and I had no idea where it might fit in, but I knew it had to feature. I don’t want to include a spoiler, but in that lift I was trying to create a scene where readers were looking in on a moment in time with total knowledge of everyone and everything, but the characters involved only knew bits. I wanted some tension between the characters, but more importantly I wanted all the tension to be on the reader. Because they knew and they could do nothing about it.

When I write a story I only really want one thing – I want people to feel something. Sometimes I want people to be upset, sometimes angry, sometimes excited or elated – but just something. I think that’s what good fiction is about. I have been contacted by readers giving feedback for previous books and they have said they have been shouting at the book, or talking out loud to the characters, telling them what they should do – that’s when you know you’ve done something right! The lift scene was designed to be one of those moments. It was the one I spent the most time on and I was pleased with result in the end. Whether it has that impact on readers I won’t ever know for sure, but the story was built around that scene and when I read it back I thought we got it about right.

Those were the two starting points and it made sense for me to talk about them. I hope this was an interesting insight and I sincerely hope you enjoy Then She Ran. But more important than anything I hope it makes you feel something. Even if it is just rage at wasting 99p!

And maybe we should learn from Stan. We should cherish our loved ones and not take them for granted. And be lovely to each other.

Thanks so much for reading the books.

BLOG TOUR: Murder at Work by Faith Martin. #Guestpost – Why I made Hillary retire. (6 more books in the series on the way)

DON’T PANIC:  HILLARY GREENE WILL BE BACK –

6 more books on the way

Today it is my turn on the Blog Tour for Murder at Work by Faith Martin. This is Book 11 in the Hillary Greene series and in it Hillary is tackling her last case as DI. Many think this is the last we will read of Hillary Greene but I am please to tell you that is NOT the case. HILLARY GREENE WILL BE BACK. Joffe Books will be publishing 6 more books in the Hillary Greene series over the next few months so there are many more happy hours of reading about her challenges. I asked Faith Martin about her decision to retire Hillary and what her future plans are. Read on for a rivetting insight into how characters take on a life of their own in the author’s mind:

Why I made Hillary Greene retire! by Faith Martin

Author photoA lot of readers who followed the exploits of DI Hillary Greene asked me why I had her retire in book 11, and then come back for the last 6 books as a civilian consultant for cold cases.  Most assume I got tired of her and then changed my mind, or perhaps I simply ran out of ideas, but neither is the case.  It was just that I knew Hillary too well to believe that she’d be able to stay on in the police service after she had ‘crossed the line’ by helping out her sergeant, Janine Tyler as she did!

It was very interesting to hear the differing reactions from readers after the storyline about Janine killing her husband’s murderer came out.  Some were total behind her – and were urging Hillary on.  Whilst others were a little put out or disappointed in her, for letting her moral compass go so awry.

But I had always been determined to make Hillary Greene human – not superhuman.  She makes mistakes, but she’s experienced and focused too.  She has always kept straight and true in putting the victims of crime (and especially murder) first.  But she’s no saint either.  And she’s certainly not exempt from suffering the consequences when life deals a hard blow, nor is she immune for the effects of shocks or life-changing events.  So the death of her old friend really throws her.  And she loses, to some extent, her judgement and patience – hence her rather ruthless determination to finally get rid of Frank Ross.  (I don’t think she would have done it if she’d been sleeping well, and wasn’t worn down with the worry of what happened with Janine. But like most people who’ve suffered emotional trauma, she had only enough resources deep inside her to cope with so much – so Frank had to go!)

And although she knew deep down that she couldn’t really have done anything else for Janine (certainly she couldn’t have thrown her old friend’s pregnant wife to the wolves) she isn’t in any way happy with what she did do either.  It just doesn’t sit well with her – especially since it means she might bring disgrace to her colleagues and the police service in general.  So – both Hillary and I were in complete agreement.  She had to go!   HOWEVER – I didn’t want to lose her.  And I knew my readers didn’t either.  So I had to bring her back.  But how?  She obviously couldn’t just change her mind and get re-instated – since all the old arguments still held true.  (And besides, in real life, she wouldn’t have been allowed to!)  But, thanks to Marcus Donleavy’s cunning plan, she could come back and solve cold cases as a civilian consultant.

And what a great chance this was, I thought, to take her out of her old comfort zone (where she had a DI’s power and all the backing that she needed) and give her fresh challenges.  Challenges where she had to answer to ‘Mrs’ Greene for a start (she hates it!)  It also gave me a chance to introduce fresh new characters in the form of her fresh new team and – last, but not least – ROMANCE!  Poor old Hillary, I thought, after so long out in the cold, deserved a bit of love.  And hence, books 12-17.

Of course, book 17 was the last DI Hillary Greene novel I wrote.  But when Joffe Books have brought it out, my readers will see that I have left some wriggle room left for her to come back!  It all depends…..
